Spring is upon us! With the nights lighter and temperatures milder, there are no excuses; it is time to get your home in order.

Come to think of it, the concept of spring cleaning is somewhat illogical. A lot of people do not really feel like moving about a lot during winter. We go to work while it is dark and head back home when it is dark; and once we are home, the thought of going back out again is just dreadful. You’d think that those long, cold and dark months are ideal for getting things done around your house. But with how things are, most of us just want to hibernate.

When the sun starts shining, it highlights all the clutter and dust and streaky windows – basically everything we’ve been neglecting during the cold winter months. So, it is time to spring into action and get things done.

Five Steps to a Cleaner Home

Consider setting aside one weekend to sort out your house so you can have more time enjoying spring without feeling guilty. Here are the steps to take:

1) Declutter in One Day

Here is the trick: do not spend more time on this than needed. For every overfilled drawer or cupboard and “stuff” pile, there are three basic options: pass on, keep, or throw away. Act fast. Only keep the things that you want. Neatly store them somewhere they can easily be accessed when needed.

Get rid of all “throw away” items straightaway by putting them in a bin or taking them to the tip. Consider taking “pass on” items to your local charity shop unless there’s a home collection the coming week.

If you have items that you are not sure about, then place them in a black bag for review soon – remember to set a reminder on your phone for this, otherwise, you’ll forget!

2) Bust the Dust

Now that your space is cleared up, do a one-stop vacuum, dust and polish. Work on all the surfaces of every room in your house – start from the top and move downwards. Start by vacuuming your ceilings, light fixtures, walls, doors, windows, blinds and curtains. After that, dust and buff all horizontal surfaces. End things by hovering your skirting boards and every inch of your floor space. If you have wooden floors, consider having a professional steam cleaner work on them for you. You can, of course, employ a professional cleaner for all tasks if you prefer – check out CJH Cleaning Services, for instance.

3) Shine On

Get your home sparkling by cleaning all glass, mirrors and windows. You could either use a personalised cleaner or the old-fashioned method so many people swear by – using a mix of water and white vinegar applied with either a cloth or newspaper. Gleaming glass can really brighten up a home.

4) Knockout Your Kitchen

For most people, the kitchen is the heart of their home. Because of this, kitchens tend to look the most lived in, and often not in a good way. So, springtime is the best time to bring your kitchen back to life.

Again, start from the top – of appliance and units – moving down. Clean all the doors of your high kitchen cabinets, then move on to your kitchen appliances (descale where necessary.) When done with that, give all surfaces a thorough cleaning before moving onto lower cabinets. Finish with the sink and floor.

If while cleaning your kitchen you realise that it is beginning to look a bit tired, then perhaps this is the year to start thinking about sprucing up your kitchen.

5) Beautify Your Bathroom

Last, but not least, clean your bathrooms from the top going down. Remove everything in the room, then vacuum the walls and floors. Make sure that you thoroughly clean all bathroom fittings and surfaces. After a thorough cleaning, your bathroom will look like it has got a new lease of life.
